November is NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). This is an event I never have taken part in because once I knew of its existence I was already a published novelist and trying to cram through an extra half-a-novel in a month when I had just finished a first draft of one a few weeks earlier was just not attractive. However, this year, I find myself with a different deadline and with the frustrations and difficulties that have tripped me up over and over this year, I’m facing November with a need for 50-60 thousand more words by early December.
So I thought I should just act like this is NaNoWriMo and power through it, even if it’s not so hot, then I can revise in December! (NaNoRevMo) But then I happened upon a Twitter post by Laura Anne Gilman (whom I much admire) saying she was going to dedicate this month as FiMyDaNo–Finish My Damn Novel(s) month. And I have decided to jump on that band wagon!
Thus I give you today’s first FiMyDaNo progress report:
Started with 44,000 words of SEAWITCH (Greywalker #7)
Ended with 46,240
Total word count acquired today: 2,240
Not quite the 2,500-3,000 optimal to make the goal without squeaking in a few marathon days, but still acceptable and quite good considering there are other things to manage, like the endlessly whining dog and my hubby’s apparently broken toe.
I’m not sure how well I’ll do on Thursday since that’s both Mom’s Chemo Day and Bella’s Growly Dog class, (which is why I feel the need to aim for 3K words a day if possible) but I think I’ll find a way through. I finally have a partial outline for the remaining half of the book–skeletal and nonsensical as it may appear– and I’m over one of the major blockages I was having thanks to some help from my friend Robin and other wise voices.
Meanwhile… time for a glass of wine and last night’s episode of Castle!
