So… first we tried kibbles, then we moved up to duck jerky, then advanced to Zuke’s Peanut Butter Training treats, but Bella’s still too hard headed to take treats during Growly Dog Class. So tonight… we escalate to stanky Cheddar cheese. Let’s just hope we don’t have to bring out the Nuclear option: hot dogs.

Not the most economical of choices, but I’ve used freeze-dried liver to great success. I’ve yet to have a dog turn her nose up to it. And it’s generally not too stinky. There are other freeze-dried options out there. SitStay.com runs a lot of promos for Nature’s Variety medallions. If you break them up, you can go pretty far with a bag.
I haven’t tried the freeze dried liver yet, or the dried salmon one of the trainers uses. The biggest problem has been staying away from sugars. Bella gets urinary infections at the drop of a processed sugar molecule–and that does seem to include concentrated fruit sugars, and mollasses as well as the regular kind (though vegetable-derived glycerine doesn’t seem to bug her in small doses.) So that lets out a lot of commercial treats that she does like, but can’t have.
I used to make (Foster Farms) Chicken Hot Dog bites for my dog by chopping them up and then microwaving for 30-45 seconds. After they’ve cooled, they resemble freeze-dried treats,and he was nuts for them.
Oops. I forgot to add that you may also have to rotate through several treat options if Bella gets bored easily.
I’ve had the same issue with my poodle, Jasper. He doesn’t like most dog treats but loves Colby Jack cheese, Velveeta, chicken. Gourmet palate this dog.
